Cloudy urine during pregnancy: what to know

Urine may look cloudy because it is concentrated, or because it contains cells, mucus, crystals, or other material. A urinary tract infection can present with burning, urgency, frequent urination, lower abdominal pressure, or an unusual smell. Kidney infection can add fever, chills, nausea, or pain in the side or back. Pregnancy can also change urinary patterns, so appearance alone cannot identify the cause. A urine test is often the clearest way to check for infection.

Tell your maternity team, midwife, or doctor if cloudiness persists, returns, or occurs with pain, urgency, frequency, or an unusual smell. They may request a urine sample and choose treatment that is suitable for pregnancy if infection is found. Drink fluids regularly unless your clinician has set a restriction, and do not take antibiotics or urinary remedies without checking first. Note when the change began and whether fever, pain, or reduced urination develops.

Contact your maternity or medical team promptly for fever, chills, pain in the side or back, vomiting, visible blood in urine, or feeling significantly unwell. Seek urgent care if you cannot keep fluids down, become confused, faint, or develop severe worsening pain. A possible kidney infection in pregnancy needs timely attention, even if urinary symptoms seem mild.

Ask whether you need a urine culture or another test, which symptoms should trigger same-day review, and which fluids or medicines are appropriate for you. Mention your stage of pregnancy, fever, pain, discharge, previous urinary infections, and any treatment already taken.
