Cloudy pee during pregnancy: what to know

Urine may look cloudy when it is concentrated, or when mucus, crystals, or inflammatory cells are present. Pregnancy can make urinary symptoms less obvious, so cloudiness should be considered with burning, urgency, unusual smell, lower abdominal pain, or fever. A urinary tract infection can sometimes be present without dramatic symptoms and may spread to the kidneys if untreated. Dehydration is another possibility, especially after vomiting, poor intake, or heat exposure. Cloudy urine alone does not show which cause is present.

Contact your maternity team, GP, or pregnancy clinician for advice about a urine test, particularly if the change is new or continues. Drink fluids normally unless your clinician has given different advice. Do not use leftover antibiotics or non-prescribed remedies. Tell the clinician how far along the pregnancy is, whether you have pain or fever, and any medicines or supplements you take. A urine sample helps guide treatment safely.

Seek urgent medical care for fever, chills, pain in the side or back, vomiting, feeling faint, or feeling suddenly very unwell. These symptoms can occur with a kidney infection, which needs prompt treatment during pregnancy. Contact your maternity service urgently for reduced urine with marked weakness or inability to keep fluids down.

Ask whether you need a urine culture, which fluids are appropriate, and which symptoms should lead you directly to urgent care. Check before taking any painkiller, antibiotic, or supplement during pregnancy.
