Cloudy urine as a pregnancy symptom: what to know

Cloudiness may result from concentrated urine, mucus, crystals, or cells released during urinary inflammation. A urinary tract infection can present with burning, urgency, frequent urination, lower abdominal discomfort, or a strong smell. Kidney infection can present with fever, chills, nausea, or pain in the side or back. Cloudy urine does not confirm pregnancy and cannot by itself explain a pregnancy-related problem. A clinician can interpret it alongside your symptoms and a urine test.

If the change is brief and you otherwise feel well, drink fluids regularly unless you have been advised to limit them and observe whether it clears. Contact your maternity team or doctor if it persists, returns, or comes with pain, urgency, frequency, smell, or discomfort. Do not start antibiotics, supplements, or over-the-counter urinary products without advice during pregnancy. Keep a simple record of timing, colour changes, fluid intake, and associated symptoms.

Seek prompt medical advice for fever, chills, side or back pain, vomiting, visible blood in urine, or feeling distinctly unwell. Get urgent help if you faint, become confused, cannot keep fluids down, or develop severe pain. These signs can accompany a kidney infection or significant dehydration and should not be attributed to pregnancy changes without assessment.

Ask whether a urine sample is needed, how soon results should be reviewed, and which symptoms require same-day care. Tell your clinician about the pregnancy stage, urinary pain, fever, back pain, discharge, previous infections, and medicines you use.
