Cloudy urine in the morning only: what to know

During sleep you usually go several hours without drinking, so urine can become darker and more concentrated by morning. Salts, mucus, or harmless particles may then make it look cloudy. The appearance may improve after you drink and pass urine later in the day.

Morning cloudiness is less reassuring when it keeps returning or is joined by a strong odor, burning, urgency, frequent urination, lower abdominal discomfort, or blood. A urinary tract infection can present with these urinary symptoms. Fever, chills, nausea, or pain in the back or side can suggest infection higher in the urinary system and requires prompt advice.

Notice the urine colour and clarity at different times, and record any pain, urgency, odor, fever, or change in frequency. If you have not been told to restrict fluids, drink regularly during the day rather than trying to correct the change all at once. Avoid judging the cause from one sample.

Arrange medical advice if the cloudiness lasts beyond the morning, returns over several days, or comes with urinary symptoms. A clinician may ask for a urine sample and review medicines, recent illness, fluid intake, and other health conditions. Do not use antibiotics left from an earlier illness because the right treatment depends on the cause.

Seek prompt medical care for cloudy urine with fever, chills, back or side pain, vomiting, visible blood, or feeling significantly unwell. Get urgent help if you cannot pass urine, become confused, or have severe pain. These features can indicate a urinary blockage or infection that needs timely treatment.
