Light yellow cloudy urine during pregnancy

Urine can look light yellow when fluid intake is adequate. Cloudiness may come from crystals, mucus, or discharge mixing with a sample. Dehydration can make urine darker and stronger-smelling, while a urinary tract infection may cause burning, frequent or urgent urination, lower abdominal discomfort, or an unusual smell. Some infections cause few symptoms in pregnancy, so antenatal urine checks remain useful.

A kidney infection can present with fever, chills, pain in the side or back, nausea, or feeling very unwell. Cloudiness alone cannot tell these causes apart, and pregnancy changes the threshold for contacting your maternity or primary-care team.

Drink fluids regularly unless your maternity clinician has given you a fluid restriction. Do not douche or use leftover antibiotics. If the change persists, or if you have urinary symptoms, contact your pregnancy-care team for a clean-catch urine test and treatment advice. Tell them how far along you are and mention allergies and medicines.

For a cleaner sample, wash your hands, follow the collection instructions, and avoid letting the container touch skin. Note colour, smell, pain, urgency, discharge, fever, and back pain. A clinician may repeat testing if the first sample is contaminated.

Contact your maternity team promptly for burning urine, frequent urgency, blood, lower abdominal pain, or symptoms that continue. Seek urgent care for fever, chills, pain in the side or back, vomiting, confusion, faintness, or feeling acutely unwell. Do not wait for a routine antenatal visit when kidney-infection symptoms appear.
