Does COPD cause wheezing?

Wheezing is often most noticeable when breathing out, although it may be heard during both parts of a breath. In COPD, airway inflammation, muscle tightening, and mucus can reduce the space for air to move. A wheeze can also occur with asthma, respiratory infections, allergic reactions, or inhaled irritants. Its presence does not, on its own, confirm COPD.

Follow your prescribed COPD treatment plan and use inhalers with the technique you have been shown. Move away from tobacco smoke, perfume, cleaning sprays, or other triggers when possible. Notice whether the sound is new, more persistent, or linked with cough, mucus, or less ability to be active. These details can guide a review of your treatment.

Contact a clinician promptly for new or worsening wheeze with increasing cough, phlegm, fever, or breathlessness. Seek emergency care for severe breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, chest pain, blue or grey lips, confusion, or inability to speak comfortably.
