Does copd cause cough?

COPD can irritate and narrow the airways, while mucus may be harder to clear. The cough may be dry or bring up phlegm, and it can be more noticeable in the morning or around smoke, dust, fumes, or cold air. A change in the usual amount, colour, or thickness of phlegm can happen during a flare. Cough alone does not identify COPD because infections, asthma, reflux, medicines, and other conditions can also cause it.

Take prescribed inhalers as directed and check your technique with a clinician. Drink fluids normally unless you have been given a fluid restriction, and avoid tobacco smoke and strong fumes. Follow your written flare plan if you have one. Do not start antibiotics or cough medicines without advice, especially when you have other conditions or take regular medicines. A persistent cough deserves assessment rather than repeated self-treatment.

Contact a clinician promptly if cough suddenly worsens, phlegm changes noticeably, fever develops, or you become more breathless than usual. Emergency help is needed for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, confusion, coughing blood, fainting, or chest pain. Arrange a routine review for a cough that persists, disrupts sleep, limits activity, or is accompanied by unexplained weight loss or repeated chest infections.
