What a cough can feel like

A cough is a forceful reflex that clears mucus, irritants, or material from the throat and airways.

It may be dry and tickling, bring up mucus, happen in bursts, or disturb sleep. Note whether it began suddenly or gradually, what seems to trigger it, and whether breathing, eating, lying down, exercise, smoke, or cool air changes it.

When to seek urgent help

Seek urgent medical assessment for severe trouble breathing, blue or grey lips, chest pain, confusion, coughing blood, or a cough after choking that does not settle. Prompt assessment is also sensible when a child is struggling to breathe, has noisy breathing at rest, or is unusually difficult to wake.

Possible causes

The listed causes are not ranked by likelihood. Acid reflux can irritate the throat, while allergic rhinitis may lead to postnasal drainage. Acute bronchitis, a common cold, and bronchiolitis can inflame the airways. Asthma can cause coughing with wheeze or chest tightness; bronchiectasis and COPD can involve ongoing mucus and repeated chest symptoms.

A cough can be a presentation of each of these conditions, but its pattern alone cannot identify the cause.

How the cause is assessed

A clinician will ask about timing, mucus, fever, contact with irritants, medicines, smoking or vaping, travel, and existing lung or heart conditions. They may listen to the chest and check oxygen level. Depending on the findings, assessment can include a throat or nose examination, chest imaging, breathing tests, or a sample of mucus.

Treatment follows the cause

Care aims at the condition causing the cough. Fluids, rest, and avoiding smoke can ease irritation while a short-lived infection settles. Reflux management may include meal timing and medicines; allergy care can address nasal inflammation. Inhaler therapy may be used when airway narrowing is part of the problem, and a nebuliser may be given in urgent care when a clinician decides it is appropriate.

Reducing airway irritation

Avoid smoking, vaping, second-hand smoke, fragrances, dust, and other triggers that reliably worsen your cough. Wash hands after close contact with respiratory illness, ventilate shared indoor spaces when practical, and follow the care plan for asthma, reflux, or other diagnosed conditions. A smoking cessation programme can support quitting when tobacco is contributing to airway irritation.

Symptoms to mention

Tell a clinician about breathlessness, wheeze, fever, sore throat, runny nose, heartburn, hoarseness, fatigue, weight change, night sweats, or mucus colour and amount. These details help distinguish throat irritation from nasal, airway, lung, stomach, or other causes.

If a cough continues

A cough that persists, repeatedly returns, or changes character deserves a review, especially if it limits sleep, work, exercise, or eating. Ongoing coughing can irritate the throat and strain chest or abdominal muscles. Identifying the driver can help prevent unnecessary use of medicines that do not match the cause.

Questions people ask

Should I suppress every cough?

No. Coughing can clear mucus and irritants. A clinician can advise if cough relief is suitable after considering the cause and your other symptoms.

Can reflux cause a cough without heartburn?

Yes. Reflux can irritate the throat or airways even when heartburn is not the symptom you notice most.
