Does COPD cause shortness of breath?

People may notice that walking, stairs, carrying bags, or washing becomes harder than before. During a COPD flare-up, swelling and mucus can narrow the airways further. Breathlessness has many possible causes, including heart problems, anaemia, infection, asthma, and anxiety, so the symptom alone cannot establish what is causing it.

Pause, sit upright, and use any prescribed reliever inhaler as directed in your personal plan. Breathe slowly, allowing a longer exhale than inhale. Pace tasks, take breaks before you become very breathless, and avoid smoke or strong fumes. Tell your clinician if usual activities are becoming more difficult; treatment and inhaler technique may need review.

Get urgent help if breathlessness is severe, starts suddenly, is rapidly worsening, or prevents you speaking in full sentences. Chest pain, fainting, blue or grey lips, confusion, or a new irregular heartbeat also need emergency assessment.

Ask what level of breathlessness is expected for you, how to use your inhalers during a flare-up, and whether pulmonary rehabilitation could help. Ask for clear instructions about when to call the clinic and when to seek emergency care.
