What wheezing sounds and feels like
Wheezing is a high-pitched sound from narrowed airways and needs urgent help when breathing becomes difficult or rapidly worsens.
It may be more noticeable while breathing out, and can come with chest tightness, cough, shortness of breath or a feeling that air is not moving freely. A new sound that seems to come from the throat rather than the chest should also be assessed, particularly if swallowing or speaking is affected.
When to get emergency help
Call emergency services now for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, collapse, confusion, swelling of the tongue or throat, widespread hives with breathing symptoms, or an inability to speak in full sentences. These features can occur with a serious allergic reaction or severe airway narrowing.
Seek same-day medical advice for new wheezing that persists, wheezing with fever or chest pain, or symptoms that interrupt usual activity or sleep.
Conditions associated with wheezing
Wheezing can result from inflammation, mucus, muscle tightening around the airways, or an allergic response. Acute Bronchitis, Allergic Rhinitis, Anaphylaxis, Asthma, Bronchiolitis and COPD can present with wheezing. The conditions are listed alphabetically and do not indicate which explanation is more likely for an individual.
What an assessment may involve
The clinician will listen to your chest and ask about onset, triggers, allergies, smoking or vaping exposure, recent illness, medicines and past breathing problems. They may check oxygen level and breathing effort. Further assessment can include breathing tests, a chest X-ray, allergy evaluation, or blood tests when the clinical picture calls for them.
Treatment is matched to the problem
Airway-opening medicine may be delivered by inhaler or nebuliser when appropriate. Anti-inflammatory treatment, allergy treatment, or treatment for an infection may be considered after assessment. Anaphylaxis requires emergency treatment; do not try to manage throat swelling or worsening breathing symptoms at home.
Lowering the chance of flare-ups
If you know your triggers, reduce exposure to smoke, strong fumes, dust, pet allergens or cold air where practical. Use prescribed inhalers exactly as directed and check technique with a clinician or pharmacist. A written breathing action plan can set out what to do when symptoms change.
Related breathing symptoms
Note whether wheezing occurs with cough, phlegm, fever, nasal symptoms, chest tightness, nighttime waking or exertion. Bring a list of medicines and any pattern of possible triggers to your appointment.
Why ongoing wheezing deserves review
Repeated wheezing can disrupt sleep, activity and daily comfort. Identifying the airway condition behind it can help you use the right treatment and recognise a deterioration earlier.

Questions people ask
Is wheezing always asthma?
No. Asthma can present with wheezing, but infections, allergic reactions and other airway conditions can also produce it. An assessment considers the timing, triggers and other symptoms.
When is a nebuliser used for wheezing?
A clinician may use a nebuliser to deliver airway-opening medicine in some situations. Severe or fast-worsening breathing difficulty needs emergency assessment rather than self-treatment.
