Does COPD cause coughing up phlegm?

COPD narrows and inflames the breathing tubes. Mucus may become harder to clear, so a cough brings it up from the chest. The amount, thickness, and colour of phlegm can change from day to day. Coughing up phlegm can also occur with infections, smoking-related irritation, asthma, and other lung problems, so it does not identify the cause by itself.

Use inhalers exactly as prescribed and check that your inhaler technique is working. Drink fluids if these are suitable for you, as this may help keep secretions less sticky. Avoid smoke, vaping, and fumes. Keep a brief note of changes in cough, mucus, breathlessness, fever, or how often you need a reliever inhaler; this helps a clinician assess a flare-up.

Arrange prompt medical advice if phlegm suddenly increases, changes noticeably, or comes with fever or worsening breathlessness. Seek urgent care for severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, confusion, chest pain, coughing blood, or trouble speaking in full sentences.
