Breathing and Wheezing Sounds: What to Know

Wheezing often becomes clearer when breathing out, although it can occur in other phases of breathing. Asthma can cause episodes after triggers or activity; Acute Bronchitis may cause wheeze during a chest infection. In children, Bronchiolitis is another possible setting. COPD can produce ongoing airflow limitation. Allergic Rhinitis may add nasal blockage, but wheezing comes from the lower airways. Sudden wheeze with swelling, hives, vomiting, or throat tightness may indicate Anaphylaxis.

Sit upright, loosen tight clothing, and move away from smoke, strong scents, dust, or a known trigger. Use a prescribed reliever inhaler exactly as your clinician instructed; do not borrow someone else’s medicine. Note when the sound began, whether fever or cough is present, and whether speaking or walking is harder. A clinician may listen to your chest and decide whether inhaled treatment, including Nebuliser Treatment, is appropriate.

Call emergency services if breathing is severe or rapidly worsening, you cannot speak in full sentences, your lips look blue or grey, you become confused, or your throat or tongue swells. Seek prompt medical advice for a first episode, recurrent wheeze, wheeze after a new medicine or food, or symptoms that do not settle with your prescribed plan.
