Cough and difficulty breathing: what to know

Breathlessness may occur when mucus, inflammation, or tightened airway muscles make air movement harder. A recent cold can irritate the throat and chest; acute bronchitis can produce a persistent cough. Asthma may cause wheezing, chest tightness, and symptoms that vary with exercise, dust, smoke, or allergies. Nasal drainage from allergic rhinitis can keep triggering cough, while acid reflux can irritate the throat, especially after meals or when lying down. Bronchiectasis can cause a long-standing cough with mucus. In young children, bronchiolitis can affect feeding and breathing. These possibilities cannot be separated safely from the symptom alone.

Sit upright, loosen tight clothing, and move away from smoke, perfume, dust, or other obvious irritants. Rest and take small sips of fluid if swallowing is comfortable. Follow a previously prescribed reliever inhaler plan exactly; do not borrow someone else’s medicine. Note when the cough began, whether it is dry or brings up mucus, and whether breathlessness occurs at rest or with activity. Arrange medical advice promptly when the symptom is new, recurrent, or interfering with normal activity.

Call emergency services if you are struggling to speak in full sentences, your lips or face look blue or grey, you become confused or unusually drowsy, or breathing suddenly becomes much harder. Seek urgent assessment for coughing blood, severe chest pain, fainting, or rapidly worsening breathlessness. Children who are pulling in at the ribs, grunting, or too breathless to drink need urgent help.

Ask what pattern your breathing and cough suggest, whether you need an inhaler or breathing tests, and which changes should trigger emergency care. Mention allergies, reflux, smoking or vaping exposure, recent infections, and every medicine you use.
