Prenatal & Pregnancy Blood Tests in the UAE: What to Get, When, and Where

The first antenatal blood panel is typically ordered at 6–10 weeks gestation during the booking appointment with your OB-GYN. Standard tests include: Beta-hCG quantitative (to confirm viable pregnancy and track early progression). Blood Group (ABO) and Rh factor — critical for Rh-negative mothers who may need anti-D immunoglobulin. Complete Blood Count (CBC) — to check for anaemia, which is common in pregnancy and may require iron supplementation. Rubella IgG antibody — to check immunity; non-immune women should be counselled about risk avoidance (vaccination is contraindicated during pregnancy). HIV 1/2 test — recommended by the UAE healthcare regulator and the UAE healthcare regulator for all pregnant women. Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HBsAg) — to plan neonatal vaccination at birth if mother is positive. VDRL/RPR for syphilis — congenital syphilis is preventable with early treatment. TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) — thyroid dysfunction affects foetal brain development; UAE guidelines recommend routine TSH in early pregnancy.

At 15–20 weeks, your OB-GYN may order the Quad Screen (AFP, hCG, estriol, inhibin-A) — a serum screening test for Down syndrome (trisomy 21), Edwards syndrome (trisomy 18), and neural tube defects. This is a screening test, not diagnostic — a positive screen leads to referral for amniocentesis or NIPT.

At 24–28 weeks, the Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) screening is mandatory in standard UAE antenatal care due to the UAE's high diabetes prevalence (approximately 17% in the adult population). The one-hour Glucose Challenge Test (50g GCT) is the standard screen; a result above 7.8 mmol/L leads to the three-hour Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) for confirmation. GDM affects approximately 15–20% of pregnant women in the UAE — significantly higher than the global average of 7–14%.

CBC repeat at 24–28 weeks to check for anaemia progression. Iron studies (if CBC shows anaemia). Vitamin D level — UAE has a very high prevalence of Vitamin D deficiency; supplementation is commonly recommended from the first trimester.

At 28 weeks, Rh-negative mothers receive anti-D prophylaxis after a blood test confirms Rh status and absence of antibodies (indirect Coombs test). A second anti-D dose is given at 34 weeks and again after delivery if the baby is Rh-positive.

At 35–37 weeks, Group B Streptococcus (GBS) screening is recommended by the UAE healthcare regulator and ACOG guidelines — a vaginal/rectal swab rather than blood draw, but included in the prenatal care pathway. Women who are GBS-positive receive intravenous antibiotics during labour.

Final CBC at 36–38 weeks to confirm haemoglobin levels before delivery. Platelet count is specifically reviewed for women with pregnancy-induced hypertension or pre-eclampsia. Coagulation studies (PT, APTT) may be ordered if caesarean section is planned.

NIPT analyses cell-free foetal DNA in the mother's blood to screen for chromosomal abnormalities including trisomy 21 (Down syndrome), trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome), trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome), and sex chromosome abnormalities. It can be performed from 10 weeks gestation.
