What this test measures
A complete blood count measures the three main types of blood cell made in the bone marrow: red blood cells, which carry oxygen using haemoglobin; white blood cells, the immune cells, reported as neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils and basophils; and platelets, the cell fragments that help blood to clot. It also reports haematocrit, the share of blood volume made up of red cells, and mean corpuscular volume (MCV), which helps to classify the type of anaemia when one is present.
