What this test measures
A fourth-generation HIV test is a combined antigen and antibody test. It looks for the HIV-1 p24 antigen, which appears before antibodies form, and for antibodies to HIV-1 and HIV-2. Detecting both shortens the window period, the time between infection and a detectable result, compared with older antibody-only tests. A reactive result is followed by a confirmatory test.
