The 25-hydroxyvitamin D test measures the main form of vitamin D circulating in the blood. The liver makes this form from vitamin D3, which comes from sun exposure and diet. It is used as the clinical indicator of overall vitamin D status. The test does not directly measure the active hormone form, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D.
