What this test measures
TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) is a hormone released by the pituitary gland that controls how active the thyroid is. When thyroid hormone levels are low, the pituitary releases more TSH to prompt the thyroid to make more T4 and T3. When thyroid hormone levels are high, TSH falls. Because of this inverse relationship, TSH can move outside its normal range before free T4 does.
