What this test measures
A thyroid panel usually includes TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone), free T4 (thyroxine, the main hormone released by the thyroid) and free T3 (triiodothyronine, the active form made when the body converts T4). TSH is released by the pituitary gland. It rises when the thyroid is underactive (hypothyroidism) and falls when it is overactive (hyperthyroidism). Free T4 and free T3 show the level of thyroid hormone circulating in the blood.
