What should you know about silent reflux asthma?

Reflux occurs when stomach contents move upward into the food pipe and sometimes the throat. Irritation may trigger throat clearing, Cough, hoarseness, or airway sensitivity after meals or when lying down. Asthma causes variable airway narrowing, with Wheezing, Chest Tightness, cough, or breathlessness. Allergic Rhinitis, House Dust Mite Allergy, and other triggers can produce similar symptoms, so reflux alone should not be assumed.

Record whether symptoms follow meals, occur at night, or improve when upright. Avoid lying down immediately after eating, reduce portions if large meals trigger symptoms, and discuss reflux with a clinician. Continue prescribed asthma inhalers and follow your action plan; do not replace them with home remedies. Nebuliser Treatment may be used in some acute settings after clinical assessment.

Seek emergency care for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, inability to speak comfortably, marked chest tightness, confusion, fainting, or rapidly worsening wheeze. Get prompt advice if a reliever is not helping as expected, nighttime symptoms increase, or cough persists with fever or other concerning changes.
