What should you know about milia on upper lip?

Milia are formed when keratin becomes trapped in a small cyst near the skin surface. Around the upper lip, they may be noticed after irritation from shaving, waxing, hair removal, cosmetics, or a healing rash, although a specific trigger is not always found. A milia-like bump is often smooth, pale, and firm without pus. Pimples, blocked follicles, cold sores, and contact irritation can look different and may need different care.

Use a gentle cleanser and a plain moisturiser, and avoid picking, squeezing, or using a needle. Pause fragranced lip products or harsh exfoliation if the skin feels sore. If the bump persists or is cosmetically bothersome, a dermatologist can confirm the cause and discuss a topical retinoid or an in-office procedure such as curettage and cautery. Products close to the mouth should be chosen with advice if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or prone to irritation.

Arrange an assessment if the lesion is painful, blistered, ulcerated, crusted, bleeding, rapidly changing, or repeatedly returning. Seek prompt advice for spreading facial redness, marked swelling, pus, or fever. A sudden group of painful blisters is not typical of uncomplicated milia.
