What whiteheads look and feel like
Whiteheads are closed, blocked pores that create small raised bumps without an open dark surface. They are often flesh-coloured or pale, with a smooth or slightly firm feel. They may cluster on the forehead, cheeks, chin, chest, or back. Unlike inflamed spots, uncomplicated whiteheads are usually not hot, very tender, or filled with visible redness.
Are whiteheads urgent?
Whiteheads usually do not need urgent care. Arrange a dermatology review if bumps become painful, deep, rapidly widespread, heavily inflamed, or leave scars, or if the diagnosis is uncertain. Sudden acne-like eruptions after a new medicine or product should also be reviewed with the prescriber or clinician rather than managed by repeated squeezing.
Possible causes
The causes are listed alphabetically, not by likelihood. Acne can combine whiteheads with blackheads, red bumps, or deeper lesions. Comedonal Acne is characterised mainly by blocked pores, including closed comedones. Milia are tiny, firm keratin-filled cysts that can resemble whiteheads but are not ordinary clogged pores and often occur around the eyes or cheeks.
How a clinician checks the bumps
Diagnosis is usually based on the number, size, firmness, distribution, and surface of the bumps. The clinician asks about skincare, cosmetics, hair products, medicines, menstrual or hormonal changes, and attempts at extraction. Examination distinguishes closed comedones from milia, folliculitis, irritation, and other small facial papules; testing is uncommon unless the appearance suggests another condition.
Treatment by cause
A clinician may recommend a gradual pore-clearing routine for acne or Comedonal Acne, commonly using an appropriate topical medicine and non-comedogenic products. Topical Retinoids can help prevent new blocked pores but may irritate at first and need careful use, especially in pregnancy. An Acne Extraction Facial should be performed by a trained professional; forceful home squeezing can worsen inflammation and marks. Milia may need sterile removal rather than acne products.
Reducing new whiteheads
Cleanse gently, remove makeup before sleep, and choose products labelled non-comedogenic when possible. Avoid scrubbing, picking, and layering several strong actives at once. Keep hair oils and heavy styling products away from the face, and wash items that repeatedly contact the skin. Change only one routine product at a time so irritation or blockage is easier to identify.
Other signs to mention
Report blackheads, redness, pus, tenderness, itch, scarring, or firm bumps around the eyes. The combination and location can be more informative than the word whitehead alone.
What to expect next
With a matching routine, blocked pores often require consistent care over time rather than repeated extraction. A review is useful when bumps persist, the skin is becoming inflamed, or the lesions do not behave like typical comedones.

Questions people ask
Are whiteheads the same as milia?
No. Milia are firm keratin-filled cysts and can look similar, but they are managed differently from ordinary closed comedones.
Can I squeeze a whitehead?
Squeezing can push inflammation deeper and leave marks; a suitable routine or professional extraction is safer.
