Why the skin may itch

Pollen can land on the face, arms and other exposed areas, where it may irritate sensitive skin. Sweat, friction and scratching can intensify the sensation. Some people with allergic rhinitis also have eczema or hives, but skin itching does not identify one cause on its own.

Hives usually form raised, itchy areas that change shape or location. Eczema tends to be dry, inflamed and cracked, while contact dermatitis follows exposure to a product, fabric or chemical. Describing the rash and its timing helps a clinician choose appropriate treatment.

Reducing the itch

Rinse skin after coming indoors, use a cool compress and apply an unperfumed moisturiser while the skin is still slightly damp. Keep fingernails short and press or tap instead of scratching. Loose cotton clothing can reduce heat and rubbing. A pharmacist can check whether an antihistamine or topical treatment is suitable for you.

Avoid fragranced soaps, new cosmetics and hot showers while the skin is unsettled. If itching follows a new tablet, supplement or cream, record the timing and seek advice before using it again. Do not apply steroid cream to the face or broken skin unless advised.

When itching needs assessment

Get emergency help for swelling of the mouth, tongue or throat, trouble breathing, dizziness or a rapidly spreading itchy rash. Arrange a medical review for skin that is painful, oozing, blistered, infected-looking or not settling, or for itching that keeps you awake. Widespread symptoms after a new medicine need prompt advice.
