Hay fever and an itchy throat

Allergic rhinitis commonly causes sneezing, a runny or blocked nose and an itchy throat. Mucus sliding from the nose into the throat can add a tickling feeling and trigger coughing. A common cold can feel similar but often brings a more general unwell feeling. Food allergy is a separate possibility when itching begins soon after eating, particularly with mouth swelling, hives, vomiting or breathing symptoms. House dust mite exposure may cause symptoms indoors rather than following outdoor pollen exposure.

Sip water, avoid smoke and strong fragrances, and try a warm drink if it feels soothing. Rinse the nose with saline using a properly prepared product and keep bedroom surfaces as free from dust as practical. A pharmacist can discuss allergy medication, including whether a nasal treatment or antihistamine fits your symptoms. Follow the label and check before combining products. Note when symptoms occur, where you have been and what you have eaten; this pattern can help a clinician identify the trigger.

Get urgent help if throat itching is accompanied by swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, trouble breathing, wheezing, dizziness or collapse. Seek routine medical advice if the symptom lasts beyond a typical seasonal flare, causes repeated night waking, or comes with fever, severe pain or difficulty swallowing.
