Short answer

Hay fever can cause a sore throat when nasal mucus drains backwards and irritates the throat, often alongside sneezing, a blocked nose or itchy eyes.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Can hay fever cause a sore throat?

Hay fever can cause a sore throat when nasal mucus drains backwards and irritates the throat, often alongside sneezing, a blocked nose or itchy eyes. The throat may feel dry, scratchy or mildly painful, especially after sleeping or speaking for a long time. Hay fever is also called allergic rhinitis.

What the throat symptom may mean

Allergens such as pollen can inflame the lining of the nose. Mucus then travels down the back of the throat, a process known as post-nasal drip. Nasal blockage may make you breathe through your mouth, which dries the throat and can add to the irritation. Repeated throat-clearing and coughing can keep the area sore.

A hay fever-related sore throat commonly occurs during exposure to a trigger and tends to accompany allergy symptoms rather than fever or marked body aches. A sore throat can also occur with a common cold, influenza, COVID-19, acid reflux, tonsillitis, strep throat or glandular fever, so the overall pattern matters.

What you can do for relief

Reduce contact with the suspected allergen where practical: keep windows closed during high-pollen periods, change clothes after spending time outdoors and rinse your face or shower before bed. Drink fluids regularly, choose warm drinks if soothing, and avoid smoke or other throat irritants. Saline nasal rinses may help clear mucus when used with safe, clean water and according to the product instructions.

A pharmacist can help you choose an allergy treatment, such as an antihistamine or a nasal spray, based on your age, other medicines and health conditions. Use nasal sprays as directed; some decongestant sprays are intended only for short-term use. If symptoms continue despite these measures, arrange a clinical review.

When to seek medical care

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, severe dehydration, confusion or rapidly worsening symptoms. These signs need prompt assessment and should not be attributed to hay fever without evaluation.

Arrange a medical appointment if the sore throat is severe, keeps returning, lasts beyond the expected allergy episode, or comes with a high temperature, swollen neck glands, a rash, pus on the tonsils, significant fatigue or breathing problems. A clinician can examine your throat and consider infections or reflux when the pattern does not fit allergy.

Questions for your doctor or pharmacist

Ask whether your combination of throat irritation, nasal symptoms and timing fits hay fever, which treatment is suitable with your existing medicines, and whether another cause such as infection or acid reflux should be checked. Mention any breathing difficulty, swallowing change or symptom that is worsening.

Questions people ask

How can you tell whether a sore throat is from hay fever?

Hay fever is more likely when throat irritation appears with sneezing, itchy or watery eyes and a runny or blocked nose, particularly around a pollen trigger. Fever, pronounced body aches, pus on the tonsils or rapidly worsening pain suggest that another cause may need assessment.

Does hay fever cause a dry throat?

It can. Post-nasal drip, frequent throat-clearing and breathing through a blocked nose can dry and irritate the throat. Fluids, avoiding smoke and treating nasal allergy symptoms may reduce the discomfort.

When should a hay fever sore throat be checked?

Arrange medical advice for severe or persistent pain, repeated episodes outside allergy exposure, fever, swollen neck glands, a rash, marked fatigue or difficulty breathing or swallowing. Seek urgent help for serious breathing or swallowing problems.
