H4N2 influenza virus: what to know

The H and N refer to two proteins on the influenza A virus surface. The subtype name identifies the virus pattern; it does not by itself predict how severe an individual illness will be. Flu commonly causes a sudden feverish illness with chills, headache, cough, fatigue, and a generally unwell feeling. Symptoms can resemble other infections, and pneumonia is a possible complication when lung symptoms become more pronounced.

Rest and take frequent drinks, especially if fever or poor appetite is present. Use only medicines that are suitable for you and follow the label or a clinician’s directions. Limit close contact while unwell, ventilate shared spaces, and practise careful hand and cough hygiene. Speak with a clinician early if you have a long-term medical condition, are pregnant, or have a weakened immune system; treatment decisions may depend on timing and risk.

Call emergency services for serious breathing difficulty, severe chest pain, confusion, collapse, or inability to drink. Seek prompt medical care if symptoms steadily worsen, dehydration develops, or fever and cough return after initial improvement. A clinician should also review a persistent cough or unusual tiredness that is not easing.
