What should you know about live attenuated influenza vaccine?

The vaccine is sprayed into the nose rather than injected. Its weakened viruses are designed to stimulate local and broader immune responses while being unable to cause ordinary influenza in people for whom the vaccine is suitable. It is different from an inactivated vaccine, which contains virus that cannot replicate.

Suitability depends on age, pregnancy, immune health, allergies, current illness and medicines. A blocked or runny nose can make administration less straightforward, while certain medical conditions may lead a clinician to recommend an injected option instead.

Tell the vaccinator about pregnancy, a weakened immune system, serious allergies, breathing conditions, recent vaccination and regular medicines. Mention if you are acutely unwell or have had a previous reaction to an influenza vaccine.

Follow the local schedule and stay for the observation period advised by the clinic. Mild nasal congestion, a runny nose or headache can occur. Drink fluids and use only symptom medicines that are appropriate for you. The vaccine does not replace advice about hand hygiene or staying home when feverish.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or face, widespread hives, fainting or sudden severe weakness after vaccination. Contact a clinician for symptoms that are severe, worsening, or not settling, especially if you have a long-term condition or are pregnant.
