The influenza incubation period is the time after infection before symptoms begin, and a person may spread the virus around symptom onset. Feeling well during this interval does not reliably show whether exposure led to infection.

After inhaling influenza-containing droplets or touching contaminated surfaces and then the face, the virus can multiply before illness is obvious. Symptoms often start suddenly and may include fever, chills, cough, headache, fatigue, and a general unwell feeling. The exact timing varies between people. Exposure timing can help a clinician interpret symptoms, but it cannot by itself confirm influenza or distinguish it from another respiratory infection.

Pay attention to new symptoms, limit close contact with people at higher risk if illness develops, and improve ventilation in shared rooms. Wash hands, cover coughs, and avoid sharing cups or towels.
