Dry cough due to an itchy throat: what should you know?

Allergic rhinitis may bring sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, and an itchy throat after exposure to pollen, dust, or another trigger. A common cold can cause throat irritation and cough as the infection settles. House dust mite allergy may cause symptoms indoors, while food allergy needs prompt attention if throat swelling, wheezing, vomiting, or widespread hives occurs. The symptom pattern and timing help distinguish these possibilities; an itchy throat alone does not identify one diagnosis.

Sip water or warm fluids, use a humidified room if the air is dry, and avoid smoke, strong fragrances, and known allergens. Saline nasal rinsing may reduce nasal irritation and drainage when used with safe, clean water and correct technique. Do not start an allergy medicine simply because the cough is irritating: ask a pharmacist or clinician which option suits your health history, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking other medicines.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, blue lips, or a rapidly worsening reaction after eating or taking a medicine. Arrange medical assessment if the cough persists, repeatedly disrupts sleep, comes with fever or wheezing, or keeps returning after a particular exposure. A clinician can examine the throat and chest and decide whether testing or treatment is needed.
