Dry cough and itchy throat: what to know

Allergic rhinitis commonly presents with an itchy throat alongside sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, or itchy eyes. A common cold can cause a scratchy throat and cough as the airway lining becomes inflamed. House dust mite allergy may cause symptoms indoors or on waking. Food allergy can cause throat itching soon after eating and may be accompanied by swelling, hives, vomiting, or breathing difficulty. The timing of symptoms and exposure history are useful clues.

Drink water, use a warm drink, and avoid smoke, perfume, dust, and other known irritants. Wash hands and avoid sharing close contact when a cold seems possible. If indoor dust triggers symptoms, wash bedding regularly and ask a clinician about practical allergen reduction. A pharmacist can advise on allergy medication, but check first if you are pregnant, treating a child, or taking other medicines. Do not deliberately re-test a food that has caused throat symptoms.

Call emergency services immediately for throat or tongue swelling, trouble breathing, wheezing, faintness, or rapidly spreading hives after food or another exposure. Seek medical advice for persistent symptoms, repeated night cough, fever, facial pain, or symptoms that interfere with sleep or daily activity.
