What should you know about an itchy throat that makes you cough?

The throat has sensitive nerves that respond to mucus, smoke, dust and dry air. Coughing then attempts to clear the irritation, but repeated coughing can make the surface feel scratchier. Allergic rhinitis may cause mucus to drain from the nose into the throat, while a common cold may add congestion, tiredness or a changing cough. House dust mite allergy can be more noticeable indoors or on waking. Food allergy is more concerning when symptoms begin soon after eating and include hives, swelling, vomiting, hoarseness or breathing difficulty.

Take frequent sips of water and avoid smoke, vaping, perfume and dusty air. Try gentle nasal saline if congestion or drainage is present, and rest your voice instead of repeatedly clearing your throat. Note whether the cough is dry or brings mucus, when it starts, and what exposures came first. Seek emergency care for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, sudden throat or tongue swelling, faintness or a rapidly worsening reaction after food or medicine. Arrange prompt medical assessment for chest pain, coughing blood, wheezing, trouble swallowing, dehydration, high fever or a cough that is worsening rather than easing.
