What causes a dry cough and itchy throat?

Allergic rhinitis can irritate the throat when nasal mucus drains backwards, and exposure to house dust mites, pollen or other triggers may keep the cough going. A common cold may begin with a scratchy throat before congestion or a runny nose appears. Smoke, strong fragrance, air conditioning and dehydration can also dry the throat. Food allergy is a less common possibility, especially when symptoms begin soon after eating and include hives, swelling, wheezing or vomiting.

Sip water or warm fluids, avoid smoke and scented sprays, and keep rooms comfortably humidified without allowing mould to grow. Saline nasal rinsing may reduce mucus-related irritation. Notice whether symptoms follow a particular place, season, meal or product. A clinician can help identify triggers and advise whether allergy medication is suitable; do not start or stop medicines prescribed for another condition without checking.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, blue lips, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Arrange medical assessment for coughing blood, chest pain, a high or persistent fever, dehydration, or a cough that is worsening or not settling. Sudden symptoms after food exposure need prompt attention because a serious allergic reaction can progress quickly.
