Itchy throat triggers cough: common causes and next steps

Allergic rhinitis can cause nasal drainage to run down the back of the throat, creating a tickle and repeated cough. A common cold may inflame the throat and increase mucus. Dust, smoke, perfume, dry air and frequent mouth breathing can also irritate the lining. An itchy throat itself is a symptom, so the pattern around it matters more than the cough alone.

Notice whether you also have sneezing, a blocked or runny nose, hoarseness, fever, wheezing, heartburn or exposure to an irritant. Symptoms beginning after a particular food need separate attention because food allergy can involve the throat.

Sip water or a warm non-alcoholic drink, use a humidifier if the air is dry, and avoid smoke, sprays and strong scents. Saline nasal rinsing may reduce mucus reaching the throat when used with safe, clean water. If allergies seem to drive the symptoms, discuss an appropriate allergy medication with a pharmacist or clinician; follow the product directions and check suitability if you are pregnant or take other medicines.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, faintness, or difficulty swallowing saliva, especially after eating. Arrange medical review for a cough that is worsening, keeps disturbing sleep, comes with chest pain or wheezing, or does not settle as the suspected cold or irritation improves.
