GERD and itchy throat: what should you know?

Refluxed stomach contents can irritate tissues higher in the throat, especially after meals or during the night. You may notice throat clearing, hoarseness, a sour taste, cough, or a sensation of mucus alongside itchiness. Allergic rhinitis and house dust mite allergy can cause itching with sneezing or a blocked nose. A common cold may add congestion, cough, or a general unwell feeling. Food allergy is more likely to cause symptoms soon after a particular food and may involve swelling or breathing symptoms.

Track when the itch appears, including its relationship to food, sleep, dust, pets, and outdoor exposure. Eat moderate portions, remain upright after meals, and avoid late meals if symptoms are worse at bedtime. Sip water and avoid repeatedly clearing the throat, which can add irritation. A pharmacist or clinician can discuss allergy medication when allergy features are present and can review treatment if reflux symptoms continue.

Get urgent help for throat or tongue swelling, wheezing, difficulty breathing, faintness, or trouble swallowing saliva. Arrange a medical review for persistent hoarseness, painful swallowing, recurrent symptoms, fever with worsening illness, or symptoms that repeatedly wake you. A clinician can distinguish reflux from allergy or infection by considering the full pattern.
