What the combined pill is used for

A clinician may consider it for cycle control or symptoms linked with conditions such as endometriosis or polycystic ovary syndrome. It manages selected symptoms but does not remove the underlying condition.

Oestrogen and progestogen mainly prevent ovulation. They also thicken cervical mucus and change the womb lining, which supports contraception and can reduce or regulate withdrawal bleeding.

The bleeding during a pill-free interval is a withdrawal bleed rather than a natural menstrual period. Some regimens use fewer breaks, depending on the product and the reason for treatment.

Tell the prescriber whether your priority is contraception, predictable bleeding, pain control or another symptom. Mention migraine, blood pressure, smoking, medicines, recent childbirth, breastfeeding and any personal or family history of blood clots.

Take the tablets according to the specific pack. The advice after a missed pill, vomiting or severe diarrhoea depends on where you are in the pack, so consult its instructions or a pharmacist promptly.

Request a review if bleeding remains troublesome, pain worsens, side effects interfere with daily life or the pill is not meeting the goal agreed with your clinician.

Seek urgent help for sudden chest pain, breathlessness, coughing blood, one-sided leg swelling, sudden weakness, speech difficulty, or a severe unfamiliar headache with vision changes.

Clarify which benefit the prescribed pill is intended to provide, when to judge whether it is helping, which bleeding changes are expected, and which alternatives suit you if oestrogen is unsuitable.
