What to check before signing consent

Dubai patients should treat hysterectomy consent as a six-item checklist. This is a major operation, and the NHS says recovery after abdominal hysterectomy can take six to eight weeks. Recovery is often shorter after vaginal or laparoscopic surgery, but the exact timeline depends on the operation and complications.

• Ask whether the surgeon is DHA-licensed for the relevant specialty and where the operation will be performed.
• Ask whether cancer has been excluded by ultrasound, MRI, biopsy or other documented tests.
• Ask whether uterine-sparing choices are clinically suitable, including myomectomy or uterine artery embolisation.
• Ask what the insurer has approved in writing, including hospital, surgeon, anaesthesia and possible conversion to open surgery.

Insurance and second opinion pathway

For insured patients, the finance question should come before the theatre booking. Daman, Thiqa, Sukoon and other UAE insurers use plan networks, exclusions and pre-authorisation rules. A hospital approval message is stronger than a verbal estimate. Patients should ask the insurer or TPA for the approval number, approved codes, approved facility, patient share and validity date.

DHA-linked patient rights guidance says patients can ask for a second opinion within or outside the facility, and written informed consent is required before surgery, anaesthesia and other medical procedures. That is useful in fibroid care because a second reviewer may separate three decisions: whether treatment is needed, whether the uterus can be preserved, and whether an oncologist should be involved.

Uterine artery embolisation may suit some fibroid patients who want a uterus-sparing option. ACOG says symptom improvement may take two to three months.
