Whiteheads under the eyes: what to know

Milia are firm, pearly keratin-filled cysts that often appear beneath the eyes. Whiteheads are softer closed pores and may occur with comedonal acne. The distinction matters because the delicate eyelid area can become irritated easily, and a bump near the lash line may have an eyelid-related cause rather than a skin comedone.

Use a mild cleanser without rubbing the eye area, remove makeup carefully, and choose fragrance-free, non-comedogenic products. Do not use needles, scrubs, acids, or topical retinoids close to the eyelid unless a dermatologist gives precise instructions. A clinician may remove a persistent milia or recommend an appropriate treatment after confirming its location and diagnosis.

Seek prompt care for pain, significant swelling, warmth, discharge, vision changes, light sensitivity, or redness of the eye. Arrange a dermatology or eye review if the bump grows, bleeds, returns repeatedly, affects the lash line, or remains despite gentle care. Do not assume every pale bump is acne.
