Sore throat and sinus pressure: what should you know?

Sinusitis can block drainage spaces and cause pressure around the cheeks, forehead or eyes, with congestion and mucus that irritates the throat. Chronic Sinusitis may produce recurring congestion, reduced smell and throat clearing rather than a short illness. A cold can inflame the same passages for a limited period. Migraine may cause facial pressure or head pain without sinus infection, particularly when light, sound or nausea are involved. The location of pressure does not establish its cause, and a blocked nose can make throat discomfort worse through mouth breathing.

Rest, drink fluids and use saline nasal rinsing if suitable and prepared according to instructions. Moist air, a warm compress over the face and soft foods may reduce discomfort. Avoid smoking and avoid prolonged use of medicated decongestant sprays unless a pharmacist advises you, since overuse can worsen blockage. Paracetamol or ibuprofen may help some people when used as directed and when medically suitable. A clinician or pharmacist can help distinguish sinus symptoms from migraine and select treatment.

Get urgent help for swelling around an eye, vision changes, confusion, a stiff neck, severe sudden headache, breathing difficulty or inability to swallow fluids. Arrange review if facial pain is severe, symptoms are worsening, fever persists, or repeated episodes disrupt daily life. Assessment is especially useful when symptoms last longer than expected or the diagnosis is uncertain.
