What should you know about small milia under eye?

Milia, sometimes called milk spots, are usually white or skin-coloured bumps that sit just beneath the surface. They are not the same as acne whiteheads: the material is enclosed in a small cyst and does not have an ordinary pore opening. Under-eye skin is thin, so rubbing, heavy products, or previous irritation may make the bumps more noticeable. A clinician can confirm the diagnosis by looking at them; avoid assuming that every white bump near the eye is milia.

Use gentle cleansing and avoid scrubs, picking, needles, or home extraction tools around the eye. Choose eye products that do not sting and stop any product that causes redness. If the bumps remain bothersome, a dermatologist may release the cyst with a sterile technique. Depending on the location and skin type, treatment may include carefully selected topical retinoids or a minor procedure such as curettage and cautery. Ask specifically how close treatment will be to the eyelid and how the skin will be protected.

Arrange a clinical assessment if a bump becomes painful, red, swollen, crusted, or starts draining, or if it affects vision or the eyelid margin. Seek prompt advice for a rapidly changing lesion or one that bleeds. These features can point to irritation, infection, or a different diagnosis rather than uncomplicated milia.
