What should you know about a single milia under the eye?

Under-eye milia commonly appear as a firm white or pearly bump beneath intact skin. They are not the same as whiteheads, although both can look pale. The area around the eye is thin and easily irritated, so diagnosis matters before using an active product. A dermatologist can check whether the lesion is a milium or another skin bump and assess its distance from the eyelid margin.

Wash with a gentle cleanser and avoid rubbing, exfoliating tools, needles, and comedone extractors. Keep cosmetics and eye creams away from the bump if they sting or cause redness. A clinician may remove a confirmed lesion using sterile technique. Topical retinoids may be discussed in selected cases, but they should not be used near the eye unless a clinician gives clear directions.

Arrange an examination if the bump is new and uncertain, persists, grows, becomes inflamed, or sits on the eyelid edge. Seek prompt medical help for eye pain, vision changes, marked swelling, pus, or redness spreading around the eye. Do not attempt home extraction in response to these symptoms.
