What should you know about a single milia?

Milia are tiny collections of keratin trapped beneath the skin surface. They often look white, cream, or pearly and feel firm rather than soft. A milium is different from a whitehead because it is not an open pore containing typical acne material. A clinician can compare it with other skin bumps when the colour, texture, location, or history is unusual.

Cleanse gently and avoid picking, needles, abrasive scrubs, or heavy products that irritate the area. A dermatologist may release a persistent lesion with sterile technique. Depending on the surrounding skin and the diagnosis, they may discuss topical retinoids or curettage and cautery. Do not apply a prescription product close to the eyes or on sensitive skin without specific instructions.

Book an assessment if the bump becomes red, painful, swollen, crusted, or starts draining. Seek advice if it changes, multiplies quickly, affects vision, or remains despite careful skin care. A new or atypical lesion deserves examination before any removal, particularly if you are unsure whether it is a milium or a different type of bump.
