Short answer

To avoid seasonal allergy allergens, reduce pollen exposure outdoors, prevent pollen entering your home and manage symptoms with professional guidance.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How seasonal allergies behave

Seasonal allergies, also called allergic rhinitis or hay fever, happen when the immune system reacts to airborne allergens such as pollen. The nose may become itchy, blocked or runny, with repeated sneezing and drainage down the throat. Eye symptoms can occur as allergic conjunctivitis. Some people notice cough or asthma symptoms when their airways are also sensitive. Avoidance lowers contact with the trigger but may not remove every symptom.

Your pattern matters: note the season, places, outdoor activities and time of day linked with symptoms. This can help identify whether pollen or another airborne irritant is involved.

Reducing allergen exposure

Keep doors and windows closed when pollen is high, and use indoor cooling or filtration if available. Wear wraparound glasses outdoors, avoid rubbing your eyes, and shower or change clothes after outdoor activities. Ask someone else to cut grass when possible. Dry clothes indoors during heavy pollen periods because fabric can collect allergens. Clean floors and surfaces regularly, and avoid bringing outdoor pollen into the bedroom. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on nasal sprays, antihistamines or other treatment suited to your health and medicines.

When to seek care

Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, wheezing that is not settling, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness or blue lips. Arrange a review when symptoms interfere with sleep, work or exercise, when sinus pressure persists, or when a child has recurrent ear symptoms. Persistent cough or blocked nose may need assessment for asthma, sinusitis or another cause.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which allergen is most likely, whether testing would help, and how to use a nasal spray or antihistamine correctly. Discuss an asthma plan if pollen brings chest tightness or wheeze, and ask how to protect sleep during the allergy season.

Questions people ask

Should I keep windows open for fresh air?

During high-pollen periods, closed windows may reduce indoor exposure; ventilate when outdoor pollen is lower if practical.

Can seasonal allergies affect breathing?

They can aggravate sensitive airways and may occur with asthma symptoms such as wheezing or chest tightness.
