Short answer

To reduce hair fall after delivery, care gently for the scalp and hair, maintain nourishing meals, and seek assessment when shedding is severe, patchy, or persistent.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common pattern
Diffuse shedding can follow the hair-cycle change after delivery.
Gentle habit
Keep styles loose and detangle wet hair with care.

Why shedding can change after birth

Pregnancy can keep more hairs in a growing phase. After delivery, some of those hairs move into the resting and shedding phase, making hair in the brush or shower seem suddenly more noticeable. This pattern is commonly called Telogen Effluvium. It does not mean that a breast lump or another unrelated symptom should be interpreted through hair loss; each symptom needs its own assessment.

Other contributors can include blood loss, thyroid problems, low iron, restricted eating, illness, stress, or a pre-existing pattern of thinning. Female Pattern Hair Loss may become easier to notice when the overall volume changes. Hair Loss guidance can help you record the timing and pattern.

Gentle care during recovery

Choose loose hairstyles, avoid extensions that pull, and handle wet hair carefully. Use conditioner on the lengths, detangle from the ends upward, and reduce heat and chemical processing while the hair feels fragile. Eat regular meals containing protein and varied foods; ask your maternity clinician before adding iron or other supplements. If you are breastfeeding, discuss every medicine with a qualified clinician. Finasteride Treatment is not appropriate during pregnancy and requires individual medical advice after delivery.

When to arrange an assessment

Book a review if loss forms smooth patches, the scalp is sore or inflamed, scale or broken hairs appear, or shedding is accompanied by marked tiredness, dizziness, palpitations, or temperature intolerance. Ask for assessment when the change is not settling or when the parting continues to widen. Mention delivery details, bleeding, diet, sleep, medicines, and any thyroid or iron history.

Questions for your doctor

Does my timing and pattern fit postpartum shedding? Should my iron or thyroid health be checked? Which treatments are compatible with breastfeeding? How can I protect my hair while regrowth develops?

Questions people ask
