What is telogen effluvium?
Telogen effluvium is a temporary shift in the hair-growth cycle that causes increased shedding.
More hairs enter the resting phase and are released later, often after the body has experienced a physical or emotional strain. The shedding is usually diffuse rather than a single smooth patch.
Telogen effluvium symptoms
The main presentation is extra hair in the shower, brush, pillow or clothing, with reduced fullness across the scalp. A widening part or thinner ponytail may be noticed. The scalp usually looks normal; marked itching, scale, pain or sharply defined bald patches suggest another process needs assessment.
What can trigger it?
Triggers include a significant illness or fever, surgery, rapid weight change, restrictive eating, emotional stress and major hormonal change. Some medicines and nutritional deficiencies can also affect the cycle. Shedding may begin after the trigger, so the relevant event is not always obvious at first.
The hair-growth cycle over time
Hair shedding can continue for a period after the trigger has resolved because follicles respond on a delayed cycle. New growth may be visible at the scalp before overall density looks restored. Ongoing shedding, repeated episodes or progressive patterned thinning warrants a fresh evaluation.
Factors that raise concern
Recent illness, marked stress, a restrictive diet, low iron intake, rapid weight loss, childbirth or a new medicine can precede shedding. Hair practices that pull or damage strands may add breakage, which looks different from shedding at the root.
How it is diagnosed
A clinician reviews the timing of shedding, health changes, medicines, nutrition and family pattern of hair loss. Examination may include the scalp and a gentle hair-pull assessment. Blood tests are sometimes considered when the history suggests a nutritional, hormonal or other medical contributor.
Treatment and supportive options
The priority is identifying and correcting an active trigger, such as inadequate nutrition or an underlying illness, with professional guidance. Gentle hair care and adequate protein can limit additional breakage. Depending on the pattern and cause, a clinician may discuss supplements, topical minoxidil or PRP for hair loss; these are not interchangeable and may not be needed for every episode.
Living with increased shedding
Seeing loose hair can be distressing, but frequent checking can increase anxiety without changing the cycle. Use a gentle shampoo, avoid tight traction and choose hairstyles that do not pull. Photos taken under similar lighting can help track density more reliably than daily inspection.
When shedding needs review
Telogen effluvium itself does not explain every form of hair loss. Seek assessment for scalp pain, redness, scale, scarring, broken hairs, a smooth patch, eyebrow loss or shedding that remains unexplained. These clues may indicate inflammation, nutritional hair loss or another condition.
Reducing future episodes
Regular meals with adequate protein, avoiding crash diets, managing health conditions and discussing medicine changes can reduce avoidable triggers. Gentle handling protects the hair shaft. Not every episode can be prevented, especially when it follows an unavoidable illness or major body change.
Finding a hair-loss specialist
A dermatologist can distinguish telogen effluvium from patterned loss, scalp disease and nutritional causes. Bring a timeline of shedding, recent illnesses, diet changes, medicines and family history; this often makes the assessment more useful than a single snapshot of hair density.
Questions people ask
Does telogen effluvium cause permanent baldness?
It commonly reflects a temporary hair-cycle shift, but persistent or repeated shedding should be assessed because another condition may coexist.
Should I start hair supplements on my own?
Not necessarily. Supplements help when a deficiency or clinical need is identified, and unnecessary products can complicate care or cause side effects.
