Can hay fever cause red eye?

Allergic rhinitis can occur alongside allergic conjunctivitis. Pollen, dust, or other airborne triggers can make the eyes itch, water, and look bloodshot, often with sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, or an itchy throat. Allergy-related redness is not contagious. Thick discharge, significant pain, strong light sensitivity, or vision changes are less typical and should prompt assessment for another cause.

Contact lenses can worsen discomfort during a flare, so remove them if the eyes feel irritated.

Seek urgent care for sudden vision change, severe eye pain, marked swelling, breathing difficulty, or a rapidly worsening allergic reaction.
