What should you know about qas asthma?

Asthma is a condition in which sensitive, inflamed airways narrow and make breathing harder, often in episodes. Symptoms can include wheezing, cough, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. Triggers vary: exercise, viral infections, smoke, dust, pollen, pets, or cold air may affect some people but not others.

What asthma means

During a flare, the airway lining can swell and the surrounding muscles can tighten. Mucus may add to the narrowing, so air has more difficulty moving out. Symptoms may be worse at night, early in the morning, or around a personal trigger. A symptom such as wheezing can occur with several conditions; it does not by itself confirm asthma. A clinician may use your history, examination, and breathing tests to assess the pattern.

What you can do

Use prescribed inhalers exactly as directed and learn which inhaler is for quick relief and which is for regular prevention. Keep a written action plan if your clinician provides one, and check your inhaler technique at reviews. Avoid tobacco smoke and notice patterns in symptoms, including after exercise or exposure to dust. Do not stop a regular preventer without medical advice. A nebuliser may be used in some clinical settings when inhaled medicine needs to be delivered during a significant flare.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help if breathing is rapidly worsening, you cannot speak comfortably because of breathlessness, your lips look blue or grey, you feel confused or faint, or your reliever is not helping as your action plan advises. Arrange a prompt review for repeated night symptoms, increasing reliever use, or activity becoming limited. Emergency symptoms should not be attributed to asthma without assessment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Which inhaler is my reliever, and how often is too often to use it? Could allergies or reflux be worsening my symptoms? Should I have breathing tests or an asthma action plan? What exact signs mean I should seek emergency care?

Questions people ask

Can asthma symptoms come and go?

Yes. Airway narrowing may vary over time, with symptoms appearing during triggers or flares and easing between them.

Does wheezing prove that someone has asthma?

No. Wheezing has several possible causes, so a clinician considers the whole symptom pattern and may arrange breathing tests.
