Short answer

Asthma symptoms can begin or change during pregnancy, and prompt assessment plus an agreed treatment plan helps protect breathing for parent and baby.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Wheezing, cough, chest tightness, and breathlessness may occur.

Do not stop prescribed asthma treatment without professional advice.

Asthma and pregnancy

Asthma involves sensitive, narrowed airways that can cause wheezing, cough, chest tightness, or shortness of breath. Pregnancy can alter symptoms in either direction. New breathing symptoms should be assessed rather than labelled pregnancy-induced asthma without an examination, because infection, anaemia, allergy, or heart problems can feel similar.

Asthma may flare after exposure to smoke, dust, allergens, cold air, or a respiratory infection. Allergic rhinitis and house dust mite allergy can accompany airway symptoms, but one does not prove the other. Your clinician may review your breathing, inhaler technique, triggers, and current medicines.

Managing symptoms

Continue prescribed preventer treatment unless your clinician tells you otherwise; stopping it abruptly can allow airway inflammation to worsen. Keep your reliever available, use it according to your written plan, and check that your inhaler technique is correct. Reduce smoke exposure and note triggers, nighttime symptoms, and activity limits.

Book a review early if symptoms are new, more frequent, or waking you. A nebuliser treatment may be used in urgent settings when inhaled medicine needs to be delivered with clinical support, but it is not a substitute for an individual asthma plan.

When breathing is urgent

Seek emergency help if you are struggling to speak in full sentences, breathing is rapidly worsening, lips look blue or grey, you feel faint or confused, or your reliever is not easing the attack as your plan expects. Contact your maternity team promptly for repeated wheezing, chest tightness, or cough that is limiting normal activity.

Questions for your doctor

Could these symptoms be asthma or another problem? Which inhalers should I continue during pregnancy? Can you check my technique and provide a written action plan? What signs mean I should call emergency services or attend an urgent assessment?
