Pneumonia causes and risk factors

Short answer

Pneumonia is caused by infection or aspiration, while age, health conditions, and exposure can influence who becomes unwell.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main pathways
Infection or aspiration can inflame the lungs.
Risk context
Smoking, chronic illness, and swallowing difficulty can affect risk.

How pneumonia starts

Pneumonia begins when germs reach the lower airways or when food, fluid, or stomach contents are inhaled. Bacteria, viruses, and fungi can each produce lung inflammation. The risk can be higher with older age, very young age, smoking, chronic lung or heart disease, reduced immunity, or difficulty swallowing. Close contact with respiratory infections may increase exposure, but symptoms cannot identify the exact cause. A cough, fever, chills, phlegm, and breathlessness can occur with several illnesses.

Practical next steps

Arrange a medical review when respiratory symptoms are persistent, worsening, or affecting normal activity. Tell the clinician about recent infections, smoking, swallowing or reflux symptoms, long-term conditions, and immune-suppressing treatment. Rest, avoid smoke, wash hands, and follow the treatment plan you receive. Ask for tailored prevention advice if aspiration, recurrent infections, or an underlying lung problem may be involved.

When to get urgent help

Seek emergency care for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, chest pain, coughing blood, or inability to keep fluids down. Prompt assessment is also needed when an infant, older adult, pregnant person, or someone with significant long-term illness becomes short of breath or unusually drowsy. Urgency is determined by the person’s condition and red flags, not by guessing which cause is responsible.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your symptoms fit pneumonia, what causes need consideration, whether aspiration or another illness is possible, and which prevention steps suit your health history.

Questions people ask

Can cold weather itself cause pneumonia?

Cold weather does not create a lung infection by itself. Respiratory germs, aspiration, and individual health factors are more relevant causes.

Can pneumonia happen without a cough?

Yes. Some people mainly have breathlessness, fever, weakness, confusion, or chest discomfort, especially older adults or people with other illnesses.
