Pneumonia causes and risk factors

Pneumonia begins when germs reach the lower airways or when food, fluid, or stomach contents are inhaled. Bacteria, viruses, and fungi can each produce lung inflammation. The risk can be higher with older age, very young age, smoking, chronic lung or heart disease, reduced immunity, or difficulty swallowing. Close contact with respiratory infections may increase exposure, but symptoms cannot identify the exact cause. A cough, fever, chills, phlegm, and breathlessness can occur with several illnesses.

Arrange a medical review when respiratory symptoms are persistent, worsening, or affecting normal activity. Tell the clinician about recent infections, smoking, swallowing or reflux symptoms, long-term conditions, and immune-suppressing treatment. Rest, avoid smoke, wash hands, and follow the treatment plan you receive. Ask for tailored prevention advice if aspiration, recurrent infections, or an underlying lung problem may be involved.

Seek emergency care for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, chest pain, coughing blood, or inability to keep fluids down. Prompt assessment is also needed when an infant, older adult, pregnant person, or someone with significant long-term illness becomes short of breath or unusually drowsy. Urgency is determined by the person’s condition and red flags, not by guessing which cause is responsible.
