Pet dander and asthma: reducing flare-ups

Dander is made of tiny skin flakes that may carry animal proteins. In a sensitised person, breathing these particles can irritate and narrow the airways, leading to cough, wheeze, chest tightness, or shortness of breath. Particles may remain on furniture, clothing, and carpets after an animal has moved away.

Not every cough or wheeze around a pet is caused by dander. Viral illness, dust mites, smoke, exercise, and other triggers can overlap. A clinician can compare the timing of symptoms with exposure and review your asthma plan.

Keep the pet out of the bedroom, wash hands after contact, and avoid rubbing your eyes or face. Clean fabrics and surfaces regularly, improve ventilation where possible, and ask another person to groom the animal. These measures lower exposure but may not remove all particles.

Use asthma medicines exactly as prescribed and keep your reliever available if your clinician has supplied one. If symptoms are becoming more frequent, arrange a review so the treatment plan can be checked. A nebuliser may be used in a medical setting for some breathing problems, but it is not a substitute for urgent assessment.

Seek urgent help if breathing is rapidly worsening, you cannot speak comfortably, your lips look blue or grey, you feel faint, or prescribed reliever treatment is not helping. Do not wait for symptoms to become severe before seeking advice about repeated flare-ups.
